Comments on 22 Bourne Road GLEN IRIS

The Addams Family house were my thoughts as I drove up to this very distinctive home in the Summerhill Estate area of Glen Iris. Tuckpointing fanatics were my next thoughts as I walked in the front gate - tuckpointing is that raised mortar that you see on some high class mainly Victorian homes - these owners (or the previous ones) are tuckpoint devotees - the renovations are also tuckpointed, as well as the front fence. Tens of thousands of dollars. Still its says they care about their home and that is the feeling you get when you walk inside. The entrance is nothing flash with a stairway dominating it but the older front rooms work well. To the rear is the kitchen and if my words here seem disjointed then that reflects my opinion of the floorplan - it doesn't quite work. The kitchen is big but the proportions and light for this north facing room don't quite do it for me. Indoor / Outdoor doesn't flow well either with a raised but small patio on a different level to the yard. Upstairs gave me a great feeling as I walked up it and arrived - big ceiling heights, good happy feel and well proportioned rooms - only one thing they must all love each other or have a shower roster - only one bathroom. Maybe no kids or their building advisor had a memory lapse. Anyway it is what it is and what it is I'm not exactly sure. Good without being great and a nice feeling without any real flow.

I must say, this type of house was the last I expected to find in Glen Iris. It is old and historic - even smells old and historic - and you feel like you should be donating a gold coin to the National Trust as you walk through just to inspect it. Has been quite well renovated and updated, yet lacks an ensuite to the first floor - could easily accomodate this within the large bathroom. A very interesting house, that is for sure.
